The Pattern Fulfilled

Religion is a pattern of how to live life. Most patterns are based on an ethic, on morals defined by its leader. Adherence to those morals requires obedience from those who follow. If you are not living according to the pattern then you are not a follower. Many believe punishment awaits those who fail to measure up, or reward/enlightenment for those who do.

Communities of followers gather together to make living according to the pattern possible. Leaders are trained to teach the pattern and remind followers how to live accordingly in an ever-changing world that holds to a sometimes drastically different pattern based on wants and desires.

Outside forces try to make followers abandon the course and inside forces inspire rebellion. How closely you guard yourself against these forces equals the quality of your faith.

Then there’s Jesus. The One who completely fulfilled the pattern. Without Him the best we have is a reincarnation/another chance to try to be better, to live better, to match up to the pattern. With Him, we are brought further than we could ever accomplish on our own. His love and sacrifice beats all.

I have a friend who thought he could do better than Jesus and made his own religion free of hypocrites. But that’s the best we can do. Jesus gives grace to all, even to those who fail. My friend’s religion offered no hope, no salvation to any but himself, that is until he will fail his own pattern. Grace is a hard concept for the self-righteous.

A few days ago, my wife got into a car accident with a young Muslim man. Immediately he checked to see if she was ok. She was, and then he proceeded to speak to her about his faith. He believed God had a reason for their accident. Later, he told us both of the good deeds he has done: taking care of the poor and other deeds of justice, etc. of which I’m sure his treatment of my wife was included. He was very kind and considerate, much more so than many of our own faith.

I could see his passion for Islam and hear of his obedience to the pattern it taught. As he spoke I thought, “Wait a minute, isn’t he supposed to want to chop off the heads of infidels and enslave women?” Here was a young man doing his best to make the grade. I pray for the chance to help him know Jesus as Lord and Savior and be filled with the Holy Spirit, for without the salvation freely given by Jesus, he will continue to run a doomed race he can’t ever finish.

Religion is a pattern of how to live life. All without Jesus are left living the best they can with hopes that in the end, it will be enough. They will keep jumping that pile of sticks till they can’t do it anymore. Then they will be left with nothing, cast out and away from their god.

Who can know it?

A tree is a tree,
and a rock is a rock,
but the heart of man
who can know it except God?

Before Him nothing is hidden,
before His eyes, everything is uncovered.

Who will go for us?
Who will represent our inability,
our weakness in the Light of Truth?

Only the Great High Priest!
Only the One who walked this earth,
tasted death for us all,
conquered its power,
and ascended into heaven.

He knows us completely,
and He loves us.
How shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation?

Announced by the Lord,
Confirmed by those who heard Him,
and Testified by God.

When He speaks, may my heart never harden.
Where He leads, may I follow.

Hebrews 4:13

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

Developing Sight, A Pathway To Intimacy With God

Teacher: “Are you ready to go?”

Student: “Yes master.”

Teacher: “Then let’s go. Follow me.”

Go outside and claim a stretch of forest. Develop in yourself a love for your forest. Take care of it. When you see a tree leaning or fallen upon another safely lift it off. Clean it of litter. If you find any bones, bury them. In this way, you will learn holiness.

Be silent and observe how your forest is alive. Listen to the tree branches sway in the breeze. Watch the critters move across the ground or through the trees. Sit in the branches and see the roads birds fly upon. Observe their paths and run with the deer. In this way, you will learn awe and respect.

If you remain silent and motionless long enough you will be awarded views many, save the patient hunter, never see. Deer, turkeys, woodchucks, raccoons, possums, and many such creatures will appear and walk among you. In this way, you will learn the value of patience and stillness.

Let the Lord speak to you in your solitude. Create a space that is your sanctuary. Praise Him there in your thoughts and glorify Him for what He has revealed to you that day. In this way, you will learn worship.

May the Lord bless you with an increased depth of perception. May you become enraptured by the wonders He has made. As you witness life, may it purify your own. In this way, you will learn serenity.

On the path of receiving from the Lord, you may be tempted to prove yourself worthy. In my forest, I was. On its entrance, there was a high gateway of fallen branches. I made jumping it a test of my worthiness. Over time the branches fell lower and lower till I was able to simply walk through to enter. Others would not have been able to enter and follow before, but after the gate was opened, the veil was torn, and the way was made clear. In this way, I learned mercy, but not yet the vast richness of the grace of Christ. It was for me a foretaste.

Also on this path of receiving from the Lord, I made a vow. I swore my allegiance before the earth, sky, and sun, my only witnesses, that I would hold true to the Beauty He showed me there in my forest. Though I know Jesus says to not make them, Matthew 5:34, I found that when made as a response to God, they are a lifelong joy. Much like a marriage, I vowed my adherence and faithfulness to Him. I leave this up to whatever seems right to you and your relationship with God. I am only telling you to make you aware, not as a directive. Such vows make a man, but as in Ecclesiastes 5:5, “It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.”

May the Maker of heaven and earth be ever with you. May you find solace beneath His wings. For surely such joy and peace you find there will be found nowhere else.

Value

Some get their value from making others feel less worthy.
Some get their value from fading things.
Some get their value from always being right.
Some get their value from pleasing the Lord.

Let our value come from the One who knows everything yet still loves us and sent His Son, Who is worthy, to die for us. He alone makes us worthy. Everything else is but rags.

We know our righteousness cannot save us, it was never able to. So why allow it to damn others?

Wealth can be more valuable than genealogies, health may extend your life, a commendable career can give purpose to your days, but all are fading. Live as a light, and draw others to Him. He alone can save from any debt. He alone rescues. Let the light of your virtue shine boldly on Him.

If it wasn’t for Jesus, we would be lost too.

Spirit Fire: Proverbs 19:11, The Path of God

“A person’s wisdom yields patience;
it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.”

It is astounding how on target Scripture is. With this one proverb, thousands of years old, it quickly ascertains the short sighted impetus of today. For my children, politics aside, we spoke of a garden. We discussed seed time and harvest. Wisdom is a seed that when planted firmly and deeply into the gardens of our hearts, souls, and minds, bears much fruit when given time. We saw “an offense” as a weed that, in a mysterious way in our mysterious gardens, can only be pulled by overlooking it.

“Glory” was the doorway we entered to see how Jesus fulfilled this proverb. Because of His sacrifice on the cross God overlooked sin, the greatest offense from the Garden till the End. The highest glory be unto Him, amen.

This proverb revealed the path God took for our salvation.

Spirit Fire – Proverbs 19:9, The Gospel In Reflection

A false witness will not go unpunished,
and he who breathes out lies will perish.

Proverbs 19:9

This was the proverb for our last Spirit Fire. After we discussed what it meant and compared it with 19:5, we came to the question that really opened the night up: How will this happen? We found that this was really about God’s justice and righteousness. He will do it. His justice demands it.

We took a step back and saw the seed of wisdom that the Proverb practically screamed: Don’t be a false witness!! Tell the truth! Which lead perfectly into my favorite question: Where is Jesus, how does He fulfill this proverb? He is the Way, the Truth and the Life! To see Him more fully, we looked at this proverb’s reflection. If perishing awaited a false witness, what awaits those who follow the True Witness: “They will not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16. It got fun as we realized how Jesus fulfilled it by flipping it. We take upon ourselves His righteousness. It enables us to pass through the punishment due us.

In the end we caught a glimpse of the fabric of this reality God’s righteousness demands and we saw how His love through His Son Jesus fulfilled it for our salvation. Amen Lord Jesus, amen.

A Different Approach To Leadership: The Vine

I have often heard Church leaders use corporate America’s model of leadership, the pyramid model, to guide their praxis. I believe this, albeit wildly successful, isn’t in line with Jesus’ model. In fact, I believe it is in direct conflict with His servant leader style as shown in John 13 when He washed His disciples’ feet.

The pyramid model places leaders at the top which even as an illustration places everyone else under them. No where in the Gospels or the whole New Testament is this found. Rather we have Philippians 2, John 13 as mentioned before, Mathew 23:11, Mark 10:31, and many passages from Paul about being a slave to Christ. None of these place a leader on top of anyone, these passages and more place leaders beneath others, which leads me to a different picture, one I believe Jesus points to and shows us throughout His life.

I believe Church Leadership needs to separate herself from Business Leadership by leaving the pyramid illustration for the vine. Pyramids themselves were a product of great ingenuity of man by the use of many slaves. It has and continues to lead businesses to great success, but for the Church I believe it an idol much like the one ring of power in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the rings. Like Lady Galadriel said, “All shall love me and despair!”, it leads to great power and the building of large structures lasting millenniums, but was that ever His goal for us?

A vine was created by God employing no slaves. Using it as a model places leaders beneath all who follow them. This is found throughout the New Testament. It places leaders nearest the Source where its roots can grow deep in Him for nourishment. It requires the Church to release her hold on the idolatry of worldly success and it embraces fruitfulness and the harvest from a life lead in faithfulness.

This change would place the Church where no business will ever go, it would lead to the cross. That is where following God lead Jesus. Buildings will fall in time, but the salvation afforded us by Jesus will endure till the end. The vine model helps people to regard others as betters, lead to a more peaceful marriage, and has a different understanding of success- one that is dependent on intimacy with God.

I am not a successful Church or business leader/entrepreneur. I have never written a book or lead a seminar. I am a homebody who reads the Word, looks around, and thinks too much. I do pray I am seen as a success by my wife and kids, and by He who made me and continually unmakes me.

May the vine model lead you to depend more on Him, for much like Jesus, it flips the world’s understanding upside-down. (Flip the pyramid model over to reveal the vine and you’ll see what I mean).
